Life happens, doesn’t it! If you’re ever curious about life’s mysteries, I suggest you read road signs. For example, how often have you thought life was going exactly the way you wanted it to and an obstacle popped up? If so, then this sign might apply:
I don’t know about you, but I’m usually up for a little adventure, so when I run into a barrier, I try not to let that stop me. I look for a different sign:
This sign makes me wonder if some people are afraid to let others in. Do they think they have something to lose? (Jackhammers and heavy equipment excluded!) By including others, I think they have something to gain–love!
I wouldn’t be human if life’s events didn’t get me down once in while, though. (Except when Miriam sends me appropriately sick-humor cards, then I can only laugh!) When I do feel blue, this sign reminds me to not get stuck there:
The sign below reminds me that all of us are doing the best we can to keep right and do right–right? Of course we are. So, tell me, what are some of your favorite examples of “keeping/doing right?” I’m a sucker for a schmaltzy story.
In case, however, I get too full of myself thinking I have figured it all out along the latest road trip, I keep a copy of the following sign posted on my bathroom mirror:
I love this sign. It keeps me hopping! And that’s what life is for, isn’t it? To keep hopping, or dancing, or singing, and loving.
And also to find a good road sign once in a while that explains life’s mysteries….
How about you? Have you seen any good ones lately?
Good morning, Gayle. Your blog started my day with a smile and zing to the heart… how great is that! Reminds me to give pause to whatever ‘road’ signs pop up. Blessings-
I especially love the zing! Thanks, Joyce.
Keeping right and doing right? Maybe the best “doing rights” are the ones we do when we don’t know we’re doing them. Are they as “right” for us if we’re thinking “I’m doing right”? So maybe we all have many more rights in our life stories than we’re aware of.
We do try to teach our children to do right, and one thing mine learned to do when they were little is to “rescue” the little frogs from our swimming pool filter. I don’t know why these little guys wanted to leap out into that water every night, but they sure did. And they’d keep swirling and swirling down inside the skimmer basket until someone came along and scooped them out.
None of them ever stopped to say “thank you,” (do we do right only when we know we’ll be thanked?), but I think they all must have offered up some kind of gratitude to that big hand that reached down from “heaven,” lifted them out of that whirlpool, and brought them gently back into the shrubbery.
Love,
LP
Maybe they should modify that sign to:
Slow, Hundreds frogs a leaping….
No, I’m going to stop right there. That’s my least favorite Christmas carol. I think my attention span is too short for so much repetition! But glad to see you guided your kiddies down the rightful path of compassion, albeit, a sometimes giggly, gasp-filled path!
Being a person who loves metaphors, I LOVE your commentary on the road of life. You make the rocky road feel like ice cream! Thinking of you everyday. Love, Jan
Ice Cream! Would that be Rocky Road ice cream? Yuk! Yuk! Glad you enjoyed it. Can’t wait til we share some more good times!
Hello Gayle.. Amazing.. made me think.. my favorite is the “Caution Sign”.. makes me think about slowing down, smelling the roses, and paying attention to my surroundings. That in turn makes me think of how grateful I am to know someone like you that writes the best blogs ever!!!!!! I am one of your cheerleaders and prayer warriors! 🙂 Joanne
You are too sweet! But keep it up! 🙂
Caution signs definitely have a place. Sometimes in front of us, sometimes out of our sight. But with you as my prayer warrior, beautiful Joanne, how can I go wrong! Blessings
I love road signs… not a thru road–however you know there is a little gravel/dirt path that if you are lucky you can maybe get thru. love those gravel /dirt roads. do you remember sitting on the tailgate of my dad’s truck and riding over the dirt roads? and then and then i fell offf!!!!
Now that you mention it, I do remember! Most of the time there was hay in the back of that truck that your dad was dumping around the fields for the livestock. Seems like we should have had some horses following close behind. Did we?
I have a wonderful sign that I look at on Long Beach Island every summer. I will send it to you in a separate email, Gayle, then you can post it if you want. (Can’t figure out how to add a photo here!) It says STOP, then underneath, it says WHOA. To me, once I STOP, I can take in whatever is before me. WHOA is my reaction to it, astonished, amazed, thrilled! I love your blogs, your insight, and your humor – thanks for sharing that with us!
much love,
Kathryn
I loved the sign you sent via email, but I’m afraid it’s above my pay grade (not that I have one!) as to how to add it to your comment. I’ve never seen a stop sign have a “whoa” sign attached. Sounds like it could be in California.
Gayle, I think of you every day and pray in my own way….my love of nature, moon, stars, ocean, babies, family, mate, wildlife, inspire me. And I do believe in miracles, they occur every day, though not often enough to suit me. You are very brave (I know you probably awaken at 3 a.m. not so brave), you have the wisdom and grace and smarts to inspire so many including me, a “big wuss”. We love having you as a member of our family and Dewan, Michael (whatever the hell his name is) has gone to great lengths to stay in touch and be with us through the good and the bad. I wish I could say something to make all of this “go away”..but you are doing so well on your own you don’t need Ish to weigh in. One of my greatest stumbling blocks in life has been trying to fix everything. Wish I could. gg
Oh, but I do need Ish to join in! Thank you for your love of love–it’s mine, too. I also love it, too, that What’s His Name brought me into your family. (You never fail to make me laugh.) I don’t know how brave I’m being, but I am being dang sick! Oncologist says it’s not just chemo, so back for more tests. Mike’s being the brave one. It’s really hard on him, but he keeps strong to take care of me. Wish I had your cooking skills in my kitchen right now. Homemade soup sounds so good! Thank you, cuz, for dropping in.
