There’s one fascinating difference between hikers and bikers. Up front, anyway. That’s the way they read signs.
Take this trail-head sign, for example:
I admit, it is a little hard to read from this angle. But see those two metal flaps hanging out on either side?
The sign on the right is posted for bikers.
It says:
Bikers like to know how far they have yet to go.
The sign on the left is posted for hikers.
It says:
Hikers like to know how far they’ve come.
Why do you suppose that is?
Maybe it’s human nature to relish how far we’ve come in life. Especially if the trail has been rocky and steep.
Maybe it’s human nature to be excited at the prospect of what lies ahead. Especially if life is full of possibility.
Last year when I thought my future was over, I took solace in my past. I had lived fully. I had loved fully. I had no regrets.
Now that I can again blessedly plan for a future, I find it ironic that it no longer matters. It doesn’t matter where I am going. It doesn’t matter where I have been. All that matters is where I am.
You will excuse me, however, if I leave you now. The Upper Sacramento Ditch Trail seems to be calling my name. Would you care to join me? We can either hike or bike, makes no difference to me!
